Push Notifications

Stay updated on your BookWish activity with push notifications. Get notified when someone follows you, likes your lines, responds to reviews, or when books you're watching become available.

Enabling Push Notifications​

iOS​

  1. When you first open BookWish, you'll be prompted to allow notifications
  2. Tap Allow when the system permission dialog appears
  3. If you previously denied access:
    • Open iOS Settings
    • Scroll down to BookWish
    • Tap Notifications
    • Toggle on Allow Notifications

Android​

  1. When you first open BookWish, you'll be prompted to allow notifications
  2. Tap Allow when the system permission dialog appears
  3. If you previously denied access:
    • Open Android Settings
    • Tap Apps & notifications
    • Find and tap BookWish
    • Tap Notifications
    • Toggle on Show notifications

In-App Notification Settings​

Control which types of notifications you receive from within the BookWish app:

  1. Tap your avatar in the top-right corner
  2. Select Settings
  3. Switch to the Preferences tab
  4. Under Notifications, you'll find two toggles:

Push Notifications​

Toggle this on to receive push notifications on your device. When enabled, you'll get real-time alerts for:

  • Social interactions (follows, likes, replies)
  • Order updates
  • Stock alerts
  • Book club activity
  • Reading challenge updates

When disabled, you'll still receive notifications in the app's notification center, but they won't appear as push notifications on your device.

Email Notifications​

Toggle this on to receive email updates about your BookWish activity. Email notifications typically include:

  • Weekly digest of activity
  • Important account updates
  • Order confirmations and shipping updates

Viewing Notifications​

To access your notifications:

  1. Tap the bell icon in the top-right corner of any main tab
  2. A dropdown will appear showing your recent notifications
  3. Tap any notification to view details and mark it as read
  4. Tap Mark all read to clear your unread count

Notification Badge​

The bell icon displays a badge with your unread notification count. Unread notifications appear with a blue dot and a light teal background in the notifications list.

Notification Types​

Different types of notifications appear with different icons and colors:

  • Social (follows): Teal person icon
  • Likes: Coral heart icon
  • Replies: Blue chat bubble icon
  • Orders: Teal checkmark seal icon
  • Stock Alerts: Amber bell icon
  • Club Invites: Blue people icon
  • Challenges: Amber flag icon

Managing Notification Preferences​

You can control when and how you receive notifications:

Do Not Disturb (System Level)​

Both iOS and Android offer Do Not Disturb modes that silence all notifications during certain times. BookWish respects your system's Do Not Disturb settings.

Turning Off All Notifications​

To completely disable BookWish notifications:

  1. Go to Settings > Preferences
  2. Toggle off Push Notifications
  3. Toggle off Email Notifications

You'll still be able to check notifications manually in the app's notification center, but you won't receive any alerts.

Troubleshooting​

Not Receiving Notifications​

If you're not receiving push notifications:

  1. Check system permissions: Ensure notifications are enabled in your device settings
  2. Check in-app settings: Verify push notifications are enabled in Settings > Preferences
  3. Check your connection: Push notifications require an active internet connection
  4. Restart the app: Close and reopen BookWish to refresh the notification connection
  5. Update the app: Make sure you're running the latest version of BookWish

Delayed Notifications​

Push notifications are typically delivered within seconds, but delays can occur due to:

  • Poor network connection
  • Device battery saver modes
  • System notification throttling (especially on Android)

Duplicate Notifications​

If you're receiving duplicate notifications:

  1. Check if you're signed in on multiple devices
  2. Verify you don't have multiple instances of the app running
  3. Try signing out and back in

Privacy​

BookWish takes your privacy seriously:

  • Notification tokens are encrypted and stored securely
  • You can disable notifications at any time
  • Disabling notifications doesn't affect your ability to use BookWish
  • We never share your notification preferences with third parties
